Biloxi/Gulfport, MS

People don’t seem to realize that while New Orleans flooded and got all the press, and government money, Gulfport was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  There are pictures here from 2006 – moving into 2008 and 2009 showing the progress.

There were so many trees killed by the hurricane along the coast.  Instead of just cutting them down a local artist named Dayton Scoggins took a chain saw to them!   I have no idea if he was hired, donated his time or what but it is amazing work.   He has a website that I’m happy to provide a link to here.  I’m not sure the inspiration but initially there was a tree nicknamed “The Duck” that looked like a duck from the storm.  While I was there, a “Save the Duck” campaign was going on, attempting to stop officials from cutting it down.
