Doctor Who Season 14 Clip Shows Ruby Sunday’s Unexpected Transformation Into Butterfly-Like Creature

The butterfly effect is taken to a whole new level as Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday undergoes a sudden transformation in a new Doctor Who season 14 clip. After Ruby and the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) met for the first time in 2023’s seasonal special “The Church on Ruby Road,” season 14 will take the latest TARDIS team on new adventures across space and time. Doctor Who will also feature returning companions alongside an all-star cast.

With Doctor Who season 14 premiering in less than a week, the official Doctor Who YouTube channel has revealed a new clip from episode 1, “Space Babies,” showing an unexpected effect of the Doctor’s travels. Check it out below:

While visiting prehistoric Earth thanks to the wonders of time travel, Ruby accidentally steps on a butterfly. As a result, human history takes a wild turn right before the Doctor’s eyes, as his new companion not only becomes a strange being evolved from insects, but undergoes a whole personality change due to a reshaped reality.

Doctor Who Might Start Reckoning With The Impact Of Time Travel

The Butterfly Effect has been a concept Doctor Who has often poked fun at, with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor being slightly baffled when Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) brings up the idea during her first trip back in time to visit Tudor-era London. Later incarnations had more fun with the concept, with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) teasing Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) by claiming she erased a man from existence, initially throwing the companion off. Now, however, showrunner Russell T Davies’ new Doctor Who era is leaping right into timey-wimey reality warping.

In the opening of Doctor Who‘s second 60th anniversary special, a brief, chaotic encounter had the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) inspiring Sir Isaac Newton to name his pivotal, world-changing theory Mavity. As such, throughout history, the word gravity is changed to mavity, and the change not only lasted in the special itself, but Gatwa’s debut in “The Church on Ruby Road.” With this running gag receiving dedicated follow-ups, it is clear Davies is intent on diving into the ramifications of joyrides through time.

Now that the new season is opening on such a strange moment, it seems Doctor Who season 14 will hold nothing back and will take an unpredictable trip in the TARDIS. Not only is it a brilliant showcase of the series’ new visuals, but it demonstrates creative usage of its core concept in a new way. However, after seeing Ruby undergo a drastic change, it remains to be seen how the Doctor will reverse this example of the Butterfly Effect.

Doctor Who season 14 premieres simultaneously on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer on May 10/11.
