Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa & Millie Gibson Tease The Mystery Of Ruby Sunday In Season 14

Doctor Who returns once more with Ncuti Gatwa taking on the mantle of the famed Time Lord traveling through time and space with his new companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). The pair met during the Christmas Special when saving a baby from a group of ravenous Goblins and Ruby decided to travel with her new friend. However, there is more to Ruby than meets the eye, with a mystery surrounding her origins and parentage intriguing the Doctor since they first met.

Russell T. Davies, who first rebooted Doctor Who in 2005, has returned to lead the acclaimed series as a new chapter of Doctor Who begins. Now working with Disney, Doctor Who has a bigger budget and is actively attempting to reach the global audience this beloved series has acquired. Davies is once again attempting to bring something new to Doctor Who with new villains, spawning from classics, including, the Toymaker, which has launched an interesting plot involving mysteries involving forces of the universe instead of only facing off against the usual alien threats.

Who Doctor Who Season 14’s Main Villain Really Is

Doctor Who season 14’s main villain appears to be an especially powerful foe, even by TARDIS standards, and this is what is known about that enemy.

Screen Rant interviewed Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson about the fourteenth season. Gatwa teased a villain so dangerous even the Doctor is scared and revealed which previous incarnations he would love to go on a multi-Doctor adventure with. Gibson shared which former companion she’d like to see Ruby Sunday team up with and discussed the dynamic between Ruby and The Doctor.

When Gatwa last spoke with Screen Rant he revealed that mischief and curiosity were what he wanted to lean into with this incarnation of the Doctor which was clear in the Christmas Special. Now, he has revealed that episode 2 encapsulates who this Doctor is, showing the range of emotions from excited fangirling with Ruby to true fear when facing a villain he doesn’t know how to defeat.

Ncuti Gatwa: Good question. Yeah, I’d say maybe episode 2. I’d say maybe “Devil’s Chord” because you get the full range of the Doctor. You see him at his most scared. He’s facing a villain that he doesn’t feel like he has the power to defeat; that he doesn’t have the power to defeat. But it’s fun. Ruby brings the fun out of him.

They want to go see the Beatles, and you see his innocence as well. The first time he sees the Beatles, it’s like, “Oh my God!” And we’re both fangirling. It’s like he’s excited about something for the first time, and then there’s all the experiences that this one is bringing to him. Which is lovely, but then it’s tragedy, and then rage as well. I’d say that one because it encapsulates who he is.

There is a larger mystery at play with Ruby Sunday as questions about her parents have remained impossible to solve. However, the Doctor seems intrigued and Ruby remains curious needing answers. However, that is not the basis of their friendship and trust which grew over the course of the Christmas Special and will continue to do so this season.

Millie Gibson: I think every single episode you see her grow more, but in the sixties in particular, you see how protective they are for one another. Even in the Christmas special, I kind of didn’t realize that they hadn’t actually had a proper encounter or got to know one another. It’s only in “Space Babies” where the doctor is filling me in on his past, et cetera. So I think it really rings true how close we are in the Christmas Special, even though we have no idea who we both are. But we connect over our lost child theme and our curiosity.

Ncuti Gatwa: He potentially has the keys to the mystery of you, right?

Millie Gibson: Yeah. So Davina McCall couldn’t help. I’m like, This guy probably could. Last resort. But yeah, I definitely love the arc that Ruby goes on and it is still going on. I’m intrigued to see what a Ruby Sunday is. Davina can’t help me.

Nucti Gatwa: So I’m going to hop in this spaceship with this man.

Millie Gibson: This my last resort. You go from Davina McCall to an alien with two hearts. Ruby’s just really desperate. She needs her answers.

What a great way to describe why she jumps into the TARDIS.

Nucti Gatwa: Davina didn’t work out. Just going to hop on this ladder here.

Millie Gibson: It’ll be fine. I’ll be fine.

Ncuti Gatwa: Ruby is a wild cat.

Millie Gibson: Yeah, Ruby’s desperate, really.

Ncuti Gatwa Pitches An Epic Multi-Doctor Adventure

Doctor Who The Doctor The Widow and the Wardrobe Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor

Gatwa had the chance to share the screen with David Tenant’s Fourteenth Doctor in “The Giggle” and he appeared in a scene with David Bradley’s First Doctor. Many of the anniversary specials have included multi-Doctor adventures, including the 60th, which introduced Gatwa. However, there are other regenerations that he hopes to go on an adventure with at some point.

Ncuti: Yes. Oh my God. I would love to go on a multi-doctor adventure with Matt Smith.

Millie Gibson Can I come?

Ncuti Gatwa: Yeah, you can come as well. You can come as well. And also with John Pertwee, Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant again, and Peter Capaldi. Get the Scots in; Peter Capaldi! All the Scottish Doctors. Which is a lot of Doctors, but that’s the adventure.

Millie Gibson: That’s the adventure you’re going to go on.

Similarly, companions have crossed paths a few times, including once again in the 60th anniversary special. Gibson hasn’t had a chance to share the screen with any past companions yet, but she knows which she would love to come across.

Millie Gibson: I think me and Rose [Tyler] would be a good run-in. I think that’d just be a nice dynamic. I actually had a few theories for Rose before I actually got cast, or before I started filming. I won’t say because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think Rose would be a good one for Ruby to clash with and just see how their dynamic would work. It’s just two blondes, and they’re two shades of red. I just think it’s perfect.
