“I Actually Had A Few Theories…”: New Doctor Who Star On Which Former Companion She Most Wants To Meet

New Doctor Who star Millie Gibson has revealed which of the Time Lord’s former companions they would be the most interested in meeting. Beginning in 1963, Doctor Who is the longest-running science-fiction television series in the world, and follows the adventures of a time-traveling alien known as the Doctor, and their human companions. After initially ending in 1989, a critically-acclaimed revival of the series was launched in 2005 by Russell T Davies. To date, 18 actors have been cast as The Doctor, including Ncuti Gatwa, the current Doctor.

Doctor Who season 14 will have a new companion cast in the form of former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson, who will play Ruby Sunday. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Gibson discussed her new role, as well as which former companion she’d most like Ruby to interact with on the show. Gibson revealed that Billie Piper’s Rose is the companion she’d most like Ruby to interact with. Check out Gibson’s full comments below:

Screen Rant: Millie, we’ve seen Mel Bush and Donna Noble return. Are there any previous companions you’d like to see Ruby run into?

Gibson: I think me and Rose would be a good run-in. I think that’d just be a nice dynamic. I actually had a few theories for Rose before I actually got cast, or before I started filming. I won’t say because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think Rose would be a good one for Ruby to clash with and just see how their dynamic would work. It’s just two blondes, and they’re two shades of red. I just think it’s perfect.

How A Ruby & Rose Meeting Could Be Explosive

Rose Hasn’t Been Seen Since Season 4

Rose is an interesting and telling choice for Gibson, because she is the original revival series companion, and one of the most beloved characters in Doctor Who. A no-nonsense, working-class Londoner, Rose would be a fiery and feisty presence for Ruby to contend with, which would no doubt bring some friction to the show. Unfortunately for audiences, the likelihood of Piper returning to the show seems slim, but with Davies back as showrunner, there is still an outside chance.

Gibson’s comments on Rose are not simply telling because of the clash she would cause with Ruby, they are telling because this harks back to the original revival companion, the one who set the tone for all others. With the Gatwa era being rebooted as season 1, as opposed to season 14, it seems that Davies is looking to do a soft reset of the show and its mythos. Bringing back Rose, who starred in series 1 and 2, would be a great way of bringing this full circle, and giving a nod to earlier iterations of the show.

While the Doctor Who season 14 cast does not include Piper, there is a chance she could appear in the future, in a guest capacity. But for now, Doctor Who is in a transitional phase, and bringing things back to a simpler and more stripped-back approach could work very well, particularly with Gatwa as the first Black Doctor in a starring role, heralding a brand-new and exciting future direction for the series to take.

Doctor Who series 14 will stream on Disney+ starting May 11.
